Seal perform an useful task not just performing at the zoo
In the early days of postage, particularly before an actual postal system was invented having a wax seal on a letter or document was a way of proving unread if sealed, i.e. use of wax seal. Or proving it was a legitimate document from the sender and producer such as a mortgage or indenture.
An indenture was a kind of debt and often children would be indentured as part of a honour of a debt to repay money by working for the lender, often for 10 or 20 years, imagine that today.
As with all things in life the more detailed the crest or seal the more important the person, or at least more important they appeared.
Of course a great thing to collect now both the wax seals and the hand stamps, rings intaglios . Like so many antiques come from a few pounds to mega zillions but an easy and affordable area to collect and of course takes up little space.
